Have you seen the film Sexy Beast? lets deviate for a moment. I love that moment it’s about 6 or 7 minutes into the movie Gal (Ray Winstone) and Dee Dee (Amanda Redmond) and friends are having a relaxing evening by the pool at the villa in Spain. In sweeps the most lush and beautiful piece of music, Lujon by Henry Mancini and his Orchestra. This has to be one of the most romantic and sensual string and orchestration arrangements ever! It is a truly beautiful piece of music and it fits perfectly with the moment on film between Gal and Dee Dee. I absolutely love it. A fantastic magically charged moment.
If you have never seen it, go get the film, even just for this moment and watch it. Be warned the language in the film is extremely graphic and just in case you didn’t know Lujon was originally written for the TV series Mr Lucky in the 50’s – Great songs and great music are built to last, that’s what I know.
Ok when it comes to the next gen music biz and creative people getting rewarded the point I really wanted to make is this. It’s something said in “Sexy Beast” and this is the reason I called it to mind then got sidetracked by the musical deviation. It’s simply this, Teddy Bass played by Ian McShane along with Don Logan (Ben Kingsley) are making the point about the possibility of being able to break into the supposedly impregnable bank to commit the ultimate bank robbery. What is their take on the apparent problem? It’s quite simple and you have probably heard this view expressed by people many times in your own life. In the film they do it in a somewhat more colourful language. “Where there’s a will, there’s a way” and as Teddy Bass puts it “there’s always a f ***ing way”
That’s it in a nutshell, there always will be and there is always going to be ways found for creative people to rightfully be rewarded for their creativity. So you need to embrace the ever growing possibilities technological developments are bring to us, including the internet. There is a fantastic world of opportunity, become a part of it and keep moving forward.
You can now promote and exploit you, your music, your band or your brand, whatever you want to call it in ways like never before.
Maybe you can get involved in finding new ways and approaches to monetizing creativity for yourself or you can benefit from the experience of those who get there before you because it isn’t all over by a long shot unless you as an individual want it to be! So take the plunge and if you haven’t done so already get your feet wet, get into the “next gen music biz.” You don’t want to miss the future!
